What is Schutzhund?
Schutzhund is a competitive dogsport
where dog/handler teams compete
and are evaluated in the areas of
tracking, obedience and protection
work.
The sport originated in Germany
where it was initially a test of
temperament and working ability and
used primarily as an evaluation of
breed worthiness for German
Shepherd Dogs.
Over the years the sport has grown
into a world-wide highly competitive
endeavor where big events can draw
over a hundred dog/handler teams
and thousands of spectators.
In addition to serious full time
competitors, and the big national and
international events, there are many
smaller Schutzhund Clubs that train
and hold trials where their members
are able to compete and earn titles.
Most of these clubs are affiliated with
either Schutzhund USA, DVG America
or Working Dogs of America
Although the sport has its origins with
the German Shepherd Dog, many
other breeds compete and benefit from
Schutzhund training. Rottweilers,
Doberman Pinschers, Belgium
Shepherds, American Bulldogs,
Boxers, Bouviers and other working
breeds excel in Schutzhund
competition.
